The Abhina Teacher Training Courses are carried out as an additional measure to ensure that Sri Lankan children receive the best education possible.
As the local education system expanded to encompass more and more subjects, there was an increasing demand for teachers for new subjects such as Visual Arts, Theatre, Drama and Music.
The Abhina Academy, sponsored by the Norwegian Embassy and endorsed by the Education Ministry, stepped in to provide the subject teachers a practical knowledge and know-how of the fields, as even though the teachers had a theoretical knowledge of it, they did not have adequate hands-on experience.
The workshops thus aim to give school teachers a thorough practical knowledge of the subjects in addition to polishing up theoretical skills.
'This programme was originally written and delivered to Abhina by Sue Weston (www.sueweston.com) in January 2006. '
The 10 day workshops are carried out around the island, from district to district with a focus on rural areas.
